Cyclist Struck on Bike to Work Day

ANCHORAGE - A 56-year-old man was critically injured Friday evening after he was struck and pinned by a vehicle at an East Anchorage intersection.

The incident occurred at the corner of Muldoon Road and Peck Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. on the day when hundreds of local residents participated in the annual Bike to Work Day. Anchorage Fire Department medics reported the cyclist was trapped underneath an SUV, and several lanes of Muldoon Road remained blocked off more than an hour after the incident.

both motorists and cyclists should be able to share the road, but this city has a long way to go in making provisions for proper routes for cyclists.... basically meaning bike-specific lanes on higher-traffic areas further from the paved bike trail network. motorists need to respect this space and check for oncoming bike traffic, regardless if they fall ahead or behind them. Cyclists need to learn how to share the road properly if they expect to make things work as well.

Hope the man is all right. Riders need a license just like anyone driving on the road. The other day I was taking a right on Benson on a green light, the crosswalk was a stop hand and a bike rider ( I saw him coming in my mirror) just ran the crosswalk sign and cut me off. Would not have been pretty if I was one of those idiots on the cell phone we all see around town. Be careful out there.
