ANCHORAGE - Whatever happens with Anchorage School Superintendent Jim Browder, the school board says his planned departure has nothing to do with budget cuts. School board President Jeannie Mackie says the district’s financial problems are very real and very severe.

One program that is due for a big reduction is the Gifted Mentorship Program, which pairs high school juniors and seniors with people in the community who are working in fields the students have an interest in. The program serves hundreds of students, but next year that will be much more difficult when two of the three staff members who run the program will lose their jobs.

“We are working hard to see how one coordinator can work with ten schools,” said Mentor Coordinator Lisa Wiley, who is set to lose her job. “We are seeing how we can make it as efficient as possible with that in mind, but we really aren’t sure yet, we are still trying to figure it out.”
