Cordova Still Shoveling OutSki resort has plenty of snow but can't openWhile many ski resorts across the country are closed because they don’t have enough snow to operate, in Cordova, it’s a different story. Cordova has gotten so much snow in the past few weeks, their ski resort can’t open because the summit chairlift is completely covered. Mt. Eyak’s general manager, David Branshaw, was at the hill Wednesday, shoveling the snack shop out of a slushy mess. He says he decided to close the lifts after the mayor declared a state of emergency because his staff needed time to shovel their own homes and boats after the record breaking snowfall and heavy rain. Branshaw says now that a majority of the city is out from under the mess, it’s time to get the lifts back up, and it will take a ten-person crew three full days to do that. Around town residents are still dealing with the slushy mess the rain brought in Wednesday. We talked to people who say the city is running out of snow shovels and scoops and has had to place custom orders to get more sent in the next few days. And Valdez is also calling for help – they say they need at least 100 more snow shovelers. The snow on schools has reached capacity, and school is closed through Monday.
