Anchorage police said a bicyclist travelling the wrong way against traffic was critically injured in a midtown car crash early this morning.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m, a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder driving northbound on Ingra Street struck 30-year-old Jay McTaggert as he rode southbound in the roadway near the intersection of Ingra and E. 15th Street.

Police responded within minutes, and McTaggert was driven to a local hospital with life threatening head injuries.

The Pathfinder was driven by 21-year-old Anchorage resident Shea Valles. While police said they don't believe alcohol was a factor, the collision remains under investigation.

Sad that it happened, but my sympathy mainly goes to Shea. It would be hard to live with hitting someone, and the cyclist was clearly in the wrong. Hopefully neither was impaired, which would complicate the issue, but people on bikes need to realize the odds are already against them enough, without compounding that by riding unlawfully.

Some bicyclists seem to feel they can switch from rules for vehicular traffic or rules for pedestrian traffic at their whim, whichever is quickest. Can they be educated? I wonder.

bike riders think they can own the streets, even in winter, just a matter of time unitl luck runs out. maybe they need to learn the laws, or is it they think laws dont apply to a nut on a bike, a truck can crack a nut easy.
