Cold temperatures are a boon for some businesses, especially plumbing and heating companies.

In Anchorage most can barely keep up with calls from homeowners desperate to fix the furnace or repair frozen pipes.

Plumbing and heating specialists offer several tips that can help homeowners avoid big repair bills. They include making sure garage doors stay down as much as possible when temperatures drop.

People with forced air furnaces also need to check the filters regularly to make sure they are clean. Workers say the filters clog faster in winter when your furnace is working overtime. That alone can stop heat from coming out.

Another thing to check are the vents outside your home. Make sure they aren’t blocked by snow or ice, which can also prevent your furnace or boiler from working properly.

Workers say a yearly maintenance check of heating systems is a good way to ward off trouble.

They also say it’s best to call in a professional if something doesn’t seem right before it becomes a true emergency.
