Classes Begin at New School LocationWinterberry Charter School has a new homeRelated Content
ANCHORAGE - The first day of school is always an exciting time, but that was especially the case for students and staff at Winterberry Charter School who are starting the year in a brand new building. The school outgrew its downtown location some time ago. The new school is nestled in a neighborhood off East Northern Lights and offers things the old one didn’t. There’s a place to park and a much larger outdoor area to play. Principal Shanna Mall says the new space is really a dream come true. “Seeing the children come in today and having a space that's big enough to hold them all is fulfilling a dream we have had for seven years.” The building went up quickly – just nine weeks to construct. And, at 15,000 square feet, Mall says the school has more classroom space that is big enough to move around in. That’s important for Winterberry’s Waldorf curriculum that emphasizes art, music and movement. Best of all, there is room to grow. Right now the K-8 school has 230 students enrolled, but space is still available at the middle school level. |

Regarding "That’s important for Winterberry’s Waldorf curriculum that emphasizes art, music and movement," parents should be aware that "movement" refers to eurythmy, an occult ritual for communicating with a spirit world envisioned by Rudolf Steiner, who founded Anthroposophy and Waldorf education. Anthroposophy's spirit world is populated by a hierarchy of gods, angels, demons, gnomes, undines, dragons and other mythical creatures. Most children hate eurythmy. While it is sometimes passed of as dance, in my opinion it provides neither the artistic achievement nor the strenuous exercise that most dance forms provide and is a waste of students' valuable education years.

It's also a nonsectarian public school. Maybe you should call and ask some questions before posting your assumptions.

Movement and Eurythmy are not the same thing! You are very ill-informed about what happens in a public Waldorf school. Please get your facts straight before posting!

Congratulations Winterberry! Your new building is beautiful! Have a great year! PS Keep on "Moving"! Your children are lucky to have a curriculum that supports children in learning coordination, balance, and cooperation in their movement and games.
