City Prepares for 9/11 Memorial
11 years after the September 11 attacks, fallen heroes remembered

ANCHORAGE – Tuesday, marks the 11th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that killed thousands - among them 343 firefighters at Ground Zero.

To honor the fallen first responders, there will be a ceremony Tuesday evening at the Alaska Fallen Firefighter Memorial at 5th Avenue and A Street.

The plaques at the memorial will increase from 26 to 30, with the addition of military firefighters who died early in World War II.

Mark Barker, chairman of the Alaska Fallen Firefighters Memorial Committee, said, “It is a dangerous job. Most of us love being firefighters. We enjoy the job. We like serving the community. But it is a dangerous job. And we have 30 individuals remembered on the Alaskan Fallen Firefighter Memorial Wall who went out to do that job and never returned home."

The event begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The keynote address will be delivered by Anchorage Battalion Chief James Dennis.
