City Pays Over $5.5 Million to Sexual Assault Victims of Former Officer Anthony Rollins in Settlement

ANCHORAGE – After years of investigation and multiple convictions for sexual assault against former Anchorage Police Officer Anthony Rollins, 11 civil cases against the city have been settled to the tune of $5,543,520.

According to Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan, both parties are pleased with the settlement – which will be funded by taxpayers.

“[The] government has no money of their own, as you know,” said Sullivan. “It comes out of the taxpayers' fund. It is money that can be taxed outside the tax cap so that judgments can be appropriated from the taxpayer and not affect other services that are funded underneath the tax cap."

Rollins was convicted of sexually assaulting five women between 2008 and 2009 in February 2011, among other charges. During the trial seven women testified against him. Those women, plus four more, later filed civil suits.

The additional four came forward with sexual assault claims after the trial.

The victims claimed that the Municipality of Anchorage did not properly supervise or discipline the ex-officer.

The payments range from $1,000 to $1.7 million. Sullivan said it depended on what the victims interaction with Rollins was.

“In a settlement, both sides agree to a certain conclusion. That conclusion's been reached and the culpability part is not part of the settlement.”

Now, the city says we are footing the bill for a man the police chief called a “psychopath.”

Sullivan said that the various supervisors at the APD who were in charge while Rollins was on duty are no longer working in the department. He said that's not due to the Rollins case, but changes in staffing over the years.

There are currently seven different attorneys for the 11 women.

Rollins was sentenced to 87 years earlier in 2012.

When are we going to start making people accountable for their own behavior? Rollins along with some of the supervising officials of Rollins should be paying this... NOT honest tax payers. This creep gets a free attorney, free meals and housing and other Liberal minded comforts of jail. this makes me sick. He wasn't afraid to do what he was doing, he already knew what his cost would be for the crimes he was committing...

Wow, really! Shouldn't Rollins pay too? Now taxpayers have to pay so that he gets 3 meals a day and get's to work-out and go to church and pray, etc.
