Firefighters are calling a Chugiak home a complete loss after battling a fire there for several hours Saturday.

Virginia McMichael, assistant chief at the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department, said crews first responded to the blaze on the 19000 block of Klondike Street just before 10 a.m., when a caller reported heavy smoke billowing into the air above the property.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, and while crews were able to prevent the flames from spreading to several surrounding buildings, McMichaels said they were ultimately unable to save the residence.

“The snow is the biggest challenge,” she said. “With this particular structure there was quite a heavy snow load, so we did have an early collapse on part of the structure.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
