Alaska has a dirty secret—the highest rate of chlamydia and second highest rate of gonorrhea in nation.

According to the Department of Health section of Epidemiology, Alaska has consistently had the first or second highest rates of chlamydia since 2000.  However, this is the first time Alaska has had such high rates of gonorrhea.

Cases of chlamydia rose 13 percent last year while gonorrhea increased 23 percent.

State health officials said it is important for Alaskans to understand that sexually transmitted diseases, STDs, and sexually transmitted infections, STIs, don’t always have symptoms and that those affected may not even know they are infected.

Now, the state is now trying a new tactic: Treat all partners of those infected as soon as possible.

“We hope we are at the peak of the chlamydia epidemic and we hope to see a downward turn soon,” said Susan Jones, program manager for Alaska’s HIV/STD program. “That will tell us if this is a success or a failure in trying to find all the partners—that is the key to controlling epidemics.”

There are a few different tests your doctor can use to diagnose chlamydia. He or she will probably use a swab to take a sample from the urethra in men or from the cervix in women and then will send the specimen to a laboratory to be analyzed. There are also other tests which check a urine sample for the presence of the bacteria. http://www.biblehealth.com/chlamydia/treatment-for-chlamydia.html
