Chena Hot Springs Begins Dog Mushing ToursResort's kennel is home to about 85 dogsCHENA HOT SPRINGS - Fairbanks got a fresh blanket of snow over the weekend which means Chena Hot Springs can start its winter dog mushing tours. The kennel operates year round at the resort. Staff members take guests dog mushing on a two-mile loop around the hot springs and people can take a mushing course and go ten miles. Cali Gavora, the kennel manager, says a lot of tourists take advantage of the activity during the day while killing time before the aurora starts. The kennel is home to about 85 dogs, many of which used to compete in the big races around the state. “We take in dogs that aren't necessarily fast enough to do races like the Iditarod or Yukon Quest, they're a little too old. But they don't want to retire to the couch just yet so they do our loop for a couple years,” said Gavora. In addition to taking in old racing dogs, the kennel also puts some dogs up for adoption. |
