Changes to USPS Routes, Delivery Schedules Take Effect

Over the last few months, the U.S. Post Office has reviewed how much mail carriers deliver and ways to make the process more efficient.

Anchorage residents could soon notice a change in their mail delivery as a result of route adjustments done by the U.S. Postal Service.

Every year, USPS changes delivery routes across the city to keep up with mail volume, and because of decreased mail delivery, routes will be condensed.

Residents could expect to receive their mail at an earlier or later time, and could also have a different carrier.

Andrea Hotchkin, a manager for the U.S. Postal Service here in Anchorage, says these changes help prevent downsizing and keep hundreds of employees working an eight-hour shift.

“When we have vacancies that come open, we tend to hold some vacancies so that we have a place for everybody,” said Hotchkin.

Officials from the postal service say rural villages will not be affected because their usage is more consistent compared to the rest of the state.

It takes a ton of extra money to deliver on Saturday. Just stop doing that and they might go into the black.

I can remember back when the norm was mail Mon-Fri. Then Sat delivery started, and was big novelty. Postage was like 5 cents then.
