Burlington Coat Factory Expands to Northway MallThe big name retailer along with Planet Fitness plan to set up shops in East Anchorage this October.
The Northway Mall in east Anchorage has seen a drop in customers since the Tikhatnu Commons was built just several miles up the road.
But with a national retailer like Burlington Coat Factory making its way to the eastside of town, it’s a possible game changer that economists say could be huge for area residents and businesses. Northway Mall manager Mao Tosi says the addition of Burlington will “definitely revive” the struggling mall. “We needed names that people would know—not only that, but to have credibility behind that to chase other local names,” he explains. The expansion will also provide more jobs to East Anchorage residents and could act as an incentive to attract even more businesses. “Retail is the biggest employer in Anchorage in the private sector,” says State of Alaska economist Neal Fried. “You have new players coming in and some older players falling by the wayside and others getting smaller, and others getting bigger…It’s sort of a constant flux—it’s an amazingly competitive industry,” he says. But new jobs at the Northway Mall could be another store's loss. It’s likely that customers who will be shopping at Burlington will no longer be shopping at other stores in East Anchorage. Burlington Coat Factory officials say they are excited to be adding another store in Anchorage. Exercise chain Planet Fitness will also join Burlington at the Northway Mall. Both businesses are scheduled to open in October 2011. |

If you have actually stepped foot inside the Northway Mall recently you will find that it is actually a desirable place to shop. It is no longer a ghost mall. There are a lot of stores as well as places to eat. I'm excited for the Burlington to complete the facelift that the Northway was in need of.

How about you make the northway mall a more desirable place to visit and maybe sales will pick up. I know I will continue to make the drive to Dimond before I step foot in that mall
