They Had "Serious, Exclusive" Relationship

ANCHORAGE—It’s been 17 years since Cameron Miyasaki lost his first love, but he still carries the ring Bonnie Craig gave him.
 
“How long did you wear that for?” assistant district attorney Jenna Gruenstein asked him Thursday morning. “Years,” Miyasaki said, smiling and wiping away tears.
 
“We were very serious about one another,” he said. “We were very much in love.”
 
The two first met as grade-schoolers in Concord, California, met again at Service High School, and began dating May 28, 1993. Miyasaki said they watched a movie on Fireweed on their first date.
 
Miyasaki is 34, married and works for Pixar as an animator.
 
When presented in court with a photo from the spring of 1994, he smiled and said, “I remember this picture.” Before Miyasaki moved to California for college, he said, they took the picture while picnicking in Portage.
 
“On your way back from Portage, did you do anything?” Gruenstein asked him.
 
“We stopped at McHugh Creek,” said Miyasaki.
 
“Was there a particular reason?” she asked.
 
“No,” he said. “I think we knew the spot and I don’t remember why exactly we stopped there. We sat on some rock and watched the sun and just talked.”
   
Miyasaki sad they talked about everything, all the time, even when he was thousands of miles away at UC Berkeley.
 
But the defense said, in the days before her death, Craig kept secrets from her boyfriend.
 
“It's my understanding you were unaware that Bonnie had exchanged phone numbers with another gentleman and had repeatedly been calling him, asking him to go out,” said Andrew Lambert, the defense attorney of Kenneth Dion, who’s accused of raping and killing Craig. “Bonnie failed to tell you about the three men she was playing pool with until the wee hours of the morning.”
    
Craig’s best friend at the time, Lynn Paula Witte, also took the stand. Witte said Craig had never mentioned a man named Dion to her.
 
“You weren't with Bonnie on Sept. 28, 199, were you?” said Lambert while cross-examining Witte.
 
“So you can't say this man murdered her, can you?” Lambert said, gesturing to Dion.
“No, I cannot,”  Witte said, her voice quavering.
 
“You can't say this man raped her can you?” Lambert said.
 
“No, I can't,” Witte said, sobbing.
 
“You can't say this man kidnapped her can you?” Lambert said.
 
“No, I cant,” she said, weeping on the stand.
