Biofuel Blend to Power 75 Alaska Airlines Flights

The Alaska Airlines CEO says the switch to biofuels will foster job growth in a new industry and protect airlines from volatile price swings.

Wednesday, Alaska Airlines will fly 75 commercial passenger flights powered by a 20 percent certified biofuel blend made from used cooking oil.

According to company officials, these flights will lead the way into aviation's next era where airlines help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The CEO of Alaska Airlines says the switch to biofuels will also foster job growth in a new industry and protect the airlines from volatile price swings, a consequence of using conventional fuel.

Alaska Air Group estimates the biofuel blend will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 10 percent, the equivalent of taking 26 cars off the road for a year.

Is this supposed to make flights to and from Bethel cheaper. I mean $189 bucks one-way. You either wait for a "special" or fork over the cash. I could see a positive if it resolved this issue, but I doubt it. Smoke screen for the club 49 probably.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not sure I will trust anything other that regular fuel on ANY flight. Hmmmmmmmmm.

How does a fuel "blend" ease the cost of fuel or reduce fluctuations? By the word blend, I'm assuming that a bio alternative is blended with regular fuel. Since that's the case, they still have to buy regular fuel at market price, and then they are going to have to pay a premium to have the bio fuel "blended" into it. My only hope is that the bio fuels don't lead to fuel line failures or is prone to freezing because that would really suck.
