Big Day for 'Big Miracle' Film'Big Miracle' whales movie filmed in Alaska debuts FridayFriday was the big day for Big Miracle – the film opened up across the country on February 3. Tons of people put in a lot of work to rescue the whales in the late '80s, and then again to bring the story to the big screen. National Guard personnel, big oil companies, Inupiat tribes, environmentalists and Russians came together during the Cold War era in the story, now made famous on the silver screen. In 1988, the Alaska National Guard played an important role saving a family of whales trapped beneath the ice near Barrow. The Guard again played an important role by having a dedicated person on the set of the movie to advise the actors and directors. All the extras who played military members in the film are current Alaska National Guardsman.

I am still trying to figure out why we had to pay them 10 million to shoot the film here in Alaska...and what did we get for letting them shoot here? Other than a 10 mill bill? They sure as hell did not spend millions here. Do we get a percentage of the movie sales? Probally not. Just wondering how it is we benefit from this?
