A CBS 11 photojournalist and dedicated bell ringer is braving the cold in an effort to break a world record: to become the longest-standing bell ringer in Salvation Army history.

Photojournalist Ken Fankhauser began Thursday morning at 8 a.m. at the Walmart Superstore on Old Seward Highway, and is still at it right now.

His attempt is part of a nationwide effort to support the Salvation Army’s mission of serving people in need.

The annual Red Kettle Campaign started in 1891, and has become the most recognizable volunteer fundraiser in the U.S.

Last year the Salvation Army raised $142 million nationally and $250,000 locally through the campaign.

Ken is not allowed to eat anything while bell-ringing.

He says his world record goal is less about fame and more about supporting the Salvation Army’s mission to help those in need.

“Even if you have some change lying on the floor of your car, you know, in your couch, whatever, grab that quarter and nickels and bring ‘em, ‘cause every little bit helps people,” Fankhauser said.

Ken is competing against 23 people in cities throughout the country to beat the 36-hour record.
