Senator Mark Begich got the news the payroll tax extension was being passed just as he was touching down in Anchorage Thursday afternoon.
He held a press conference just a short time after that, saying he’s glad that House Republicans finally saw the light.
Begich says the entire Alaska delegation worked to try and get House members to agree to an extension, but he also says average citizens made a difference as well.
“Instead of politicians just arguing over this, it was all over the country, and from our state and across the state, calling into our office, to other offices, to friends they knew to say this is important,” Begich said.
Senator Lisa Murkowski says she’s pleased the two-month extension went through and hopes that Congress can now work toward a longer agreement.
Congressman Don Young said he too was pleased at the extension but disappointed at the wait it happened.
