Bean's Cafe Feeds Hundreds This ThanksgivingHungry and homeless all welcome at nonprofit kitchenANCHORAGE - Like they do every day, and like they've done for decades, the doors of Bean's Café opened to the hungry and the homeless this Thanksgiving. “A lot of these people, either because of age or other factors, they're not able to do any work and we have a responsibility to take care of them as we would anybody,” said Archbishop Francis Hurley. “All of us run into situations where we need help and a lot of us are able to get back on our feet and a number of these people are not,” he said Thursday, inside a packed Bean’s Café. Hundreds of people streamed into the Third Avenue venue for the traditional Thanksgiving feast, pie included. “I love it I love being around loving people and I love being around my friends and family,” said Veta Waghiwi, who enjoyed the meal with her husband. Like in past years, there was no shortage of volunteers giving up there time to help. “It's really opened my eyes to how you can help serve your community, you can help give back,” said Mike Stewart, who was volunteering for the first time. Susan Stanco brought her young son Ethan to help out. “This is the first time that he's been in any type of environment like this and it's very important,” said Stanco. In addition to the faces they see everyday, Bean's Café staff and volunteers served one of the newest families in town. “It's very hospitable here in Anchorage; it's our second day here,” said Jonathon Earley, who came up from Pennsylvania with his wife and infant daughter. “We are thankful that we made it here because it was rough we almost didn't make it,” said Earley. Bean’s Café served around 1,000 meals this Thanksgiving. |
