We just can’t help ourselves, some of us spend more money during the holiday season than we do all year.

It’s generosity that doesn’t go unnoticed by the watchful eyes of thieves. Police say there have already been two incidents where items were stolen in store parking lots.

“They left their vehicle for a short time, says APD Oficer Anita Shell. “When they came back they found they’d been broken into and all their belongings had been stolen.”

Shell says one thing that could prevent that is to be particularly wary of who is around you in a public space.

“If somebody is loitering or looking like they are waiting for you to leave waiting for people to thin out so they can do you harm you really should consider driving away and parking elsewhere,” says Shell.

Police have other tips. If you are having presents delivered to your door ask someone you trust to pick them up or a thief could do it for you.

“We have had some cases recently where people have been following the UPS driver and waited until they rang the doorbell. When nobody answered they left the packages on the door step and the UPS driver drove off. That’s when someone else took the packages and walked off.”

Shell says another thing not to do is advertise that you have highticket purchases in your house by putting out the boxes with the garbage. She says the safe way is to break all boxes down and put the cardboard inside a dark plastic bag.

Police say after the holidays is a great time to inventory the electronic equipment in your home.

Making a list of valuables and noting the make model and serial number is the only chance you’ll have of getting them back if they ever do get stolen.
