Bar Brawl Gets Ugly at Fairbanks' Red Fox

Three people were jailed and one person was sent to the hospital after a brawl at the Red Fox Bar and Grill about 12:28 a.m. Monday morning.

FAIRBANKS — Three people were jailed and one person was sent to the hospital after a brawl at the Red Fox Bar and Grill about 12:28 a.m. Monday morning.


The fight involved at least six people and took place over two pool tables and into the kitchen, Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said. University of Alaska Fairbanks police also responded to the scuffle.

At the end of the night, Derek Hibbbs, 26, and John Jackson, 24 — both Fort Wainwright soldiers — were charged with felony assault. 

Hibbs is accused of kicking a 22-year-old woman from Fairbanks in the face with a military boot. She was knocked unconscious. She was later taken to Bassett Army hospital and released.

Jackson is accused of punching a 23-year old man from Fort Wainwright in the head. Because Jackson has training and experience as a boxer, his fists are legally considered dangerous instruments.

Shawn Olson, 24, of Fort Wainwright has been charged with sixth-degree disorderly conduct for allegedly joining the fight. 

A misdemeanor assault charge for Hibbs’ wife, Amanda Hibbs, 24, has been forwarded to the district attorney’s office. She allegedly started the fight with the woman her husband is accused of kicking in the head. 

The four people charged and identified as instigators were leaving the bar together in a cab when troopers arrived, Ipsen said.

When they were arrested, Jackson did not follow troopers’ orders and was Tasered. He also provided a false name, Ipsen said. All four said they were not involved in the fight. 

Troopers consider the brawl as a series of interrelated fights between people who in most cases did not seem to know each other, Ipsen said. 

There were many witnesses, some of them sober, she said.

Witnesses told troopers Jackson had been asked to leave the bar earlier. 

Later, he reportedly went up to the bar and punched a man in the face without warning. The men did not know each other and had not any other interaction that night, Ipsen said. A woman playing pool with the man at the bar reportedly tried to break up the fight. 

At this point Shawn Olson joined the fight and it escalated, Ipsen said. Amanda Hibbs allegedly began a fight with the woman who had been trying to break the fight up. When the woman was on the floor, her husband allegedly kicked the woman in the face.

Having lived in Fairbanks for 23 years, I can tell the quality of soldier at Ft. Wainwright has fallen dramatically. They are not professionals anymore, just a bunch of thugs and bullies. It is far past time for the Fairbanks City Council to tell Army officials to close the gates to their base, and confine the troublemakers and murderers upon it. Fairbanks and the surrounding areas will me much safer without them. (no, it will not economically devastate the area, as Fairbanks was there BEFORE the Army, and it will be there LONG after they are gone!)

Gee maybe we should rethink things. If a guy shoots a man outside a bar in Anchorage with a gun and he is a minority and says it is self defense then no one wants to testify and the guy walks free even if the person he shoots dies. But if you like boxing and have training and use your fists and are in the military and did not use a gun they say you are dangerous and receive consequences. THESE COLORS NEVER RUN AND NEVER WILL AND THAT IS WHY WE ALL READ THIS ARTICLE. If he had shot and run and shot a few witnesses too then he would make bail if and only if arrested and civilians think you are a dangerous to them. The bar security plan obviously does not work. When you deal with a bunch of drunk and drinking people you need to defuse the problem by 86ing the particpants before it grows and blows. The soldier will receive military consequences for his actions which is more than a minority guy received for killing a man and injuring two bystanders in the process in April 2007 in Anchorage

Yeah Ft wainwright soldiers have always caused trouble like this in Fairbanks. They ought to make a rule. If ya want to fight civilians go straight to Iraq or Libya.

They must be the pride of their unit. What an embarrassment to the rest of us associated with the military. Save the fighting for overseas! This unacceptable behavior will have negative bearing on the new proposed bill allowing 'soldiers to drink before their 18", maybe we should look into a bill for those OVER 18.
