ANCHORAGE—For thousands of students across the Anchorage district, Tuesday was the first day of school. For many families and kids, it’s a big wake-up call—as in earlier to bed and definitely earlier to rise.

The Mathews family has two children headed for elementary school. Seven-year-old Hanna and nine-year-old Kameron. Hanna woke up excited and ready to go while Kameron took just a little longer to get into the swing of things.

Leanna says that’s the way it usually is around her house but she knows both her children are excited.

“I hope they have a good first day and make lots of new friends,” Leanna said. “And enjoy being young. I think those are the best memories I have—from elementary school.”

The family has been shopping for school supplies and new clothes and Tuesday morning the kids were showing them off as they sprinted around the house getting ready.

Following family tradition, Leanna took a “first day of school” picture in front of the house.

She drove her children to school and, with a kiss, sent them off with a wish for a good start to a great year.
