"Awareness Month" OverloadANCHORAGE - In stores and on TV, it’s hard to miss all the signs that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “NFL football players wearing pink. Pink everywhere, absolutely everywhere,” said Bradley Lewkowkitz. Even the Alaska Aces played their home opener on a rosey-hued rink to support the cause. While breast cancer may be the most well known cause in October, it’s not the only one. Domestic Violence Prevention is also a big one. But did you know October is also designated: National Book Month National Work & Family Month CyberSecurity Awareness Month Filipino American History Month LGBT History Month Bullying Prevention Month Physical Therapy Month American Pharmacists Month Polish American Heritage Month National Spina Bifida Awareness Month National Child Health Day Healthy Lung & Clean Air Month National Family Sexuality Education Month National Dental Hygiene Month National Down Syndrome Awareness Month “Actually I'm unaware of almost all of these,” said Lewkowitz. “Some of them I've never heard of. Polish American Heritage Month, I've never heard of that and I'd like to know more about it,” said Charlotte Phelps. For some the list is a little overwhelming. “If you're looking for a cause to support it's kind of hard to choose one because they're all important,” said Phelps. Lewkowitz agrees. “I'm learning how to read and I'm polish and I'm engage to a Filipino woman, it's a very daunting task to pick just one.” Awareness doesn’t end at the end of the month; November is also Diabetes Awareness Month, Lung Cancer Month and Prostate Cancer Month as well. |

Abd STILL no one listens to victims of D/V. esp not Governor Parnell nor AWAIC or the crisis lines etc. You'd think after (well over) 20 years of no progress at all on these statistics it's so called Advocates for victims would stop and pay attention to what D/V victims (of whatever gender) have been telling you guys all along. The solutions (ie UAA's, Parnell's, AWAIC's) are the problem. It all comes down to the FACT that it is illegal to force any wife to testify against her husband. Society OWES it to victims of D/V (of whatever age) to defend and protect them. We do not own them them forced convertions to the theory of Psychological interventions (which have NO efficasy proved). In fact, it is the administration of Psychology verses LAW ENFORCEMENT that has turned this into a farce. A very harmful farce.

These are causes that should be remembered throughout the year, not only just before major holidays. This just shows they're trying to milk the peoples' giving spirit.

if you are an adult being 'bullied', which by the way i think is totally being over used, by a minor, the best thing to do is talk to them, talk to their parent and if that doesn't work, do what we were taught to do growing up 'ignore the ignorant people!' acknowledging them gives them 'power' just tell them to leave you alone, then ignore them, act like they dont exsist. im tired of people over using the bully term. people need to learn to stand up for themselves more instead of crying bully everytime someone calls them a name.

In regards to bullying...What can an adult or parent do if they experience this happening? I understand saying something to the bully along with your presence is a deterrent against the act, but little else can be done because of the possibility of being accused of assault or abuse on a minor. What can an adult really do?
