ANCHORAGE - Thieves could be checking out your garbage to see if you have anything inside your home worth stealing.

With people putting out trash after opening their Christmas gifts, police say you could be advertising what Santa Claus brought you.

They say don't make it easy for burglars to figure out the best homes to target.

"We have to make it as hard for thieves and burglars as we possibly can,” said Lieutenant Dave Parker. “We don't need to advertise the fact that we have guns in our home or valuables in our home."

Police recommend that you break down big boxes from electronics and put them inside your trash containers so they're not immediately visible.
