Suspense mounts with regular leader changes

ANCHORAGE - The Last Great Race is heading into the home stretch and some say who will win is anyone’s guess.

Cheryl Zachery has been updating numbers at Iditarod Headquarters in Anchorage for 18 years.

“As we get closer I think our adrenaline starts pumping just a little bit more as we see those people go back and forth and back and forth,” said Zachery.

But this year she isn’t making any bets about who will win.

“Martin’s led the race for a long time, then we had Mitch Seavey up there yesterday, now Jeff today and Aliy’s been there too -- so it’s really been a fun race.”

Leaders have been flip-flopping since the race began. In the latest standings Monday evening, Mitch Seavey had passed Jeff King on the trail.

Musher Scott Janssen has been watching the shift since he scratched from the race in Rainy Pass. He had hoped to be spending Monday, his 52nd birthday, on the trail, but was working at his Anchorage funeral home instead. He had a prediction for the race.

“Right now my personal feeling is that Jeff is going to win it,” said Janssen. “He isn’t going to walk away with the race but I think he’s going to win it by more than an hour and a half.

Janssen plans to fly to Nome on Tuesday to see if his prediction was right.
