Are Alaska Employers Overlooking Unemployed Job Applicants? In a tough economy, many job seekers say finding a job has essentially become a job-but are the hiring powers passing over the unemployed?
Across Alaska, nearly 50,000 people are unemployed and actively looking for work.
The Anchorage Midtown Job Center helps nearly 8,000 unemployed Alaskans every month with job seeker services, resume assistance and computer literacy. “It’s very difficult because there’s lots of people competing for the same job, and they’re a lot younger [with] lots more experience,” said Jacqueline Ray, who has been unemployed for nine months. Ray was working for a nonprofit organization and was let go with less than a month’s notice. She thought it would “be a piece of cake” to find a new job, but instead the search has been “very difficult.” William Payne, 59, is also unemployed and has been for two years. “It’s been a great deal more difficult and I can just only attribute that Alaska is feeling what the rest of the United States is feeling,” he said. Payne, a teacher by trade, moved to Alaska two years ago to teach and anticipated an easy transition. “I have many years of previous experience and they financially tell me that they can’t afford to pay that—that’s my dilemma,” he said. He’s been unsuccessful finding a job so far, and says the only discrimination he feels the unemployment population faces is ageism. “I think the age factor might be one of the bigger ones, bigger issues,” he said. |

They want the new brain washed generation to take over. Bottom line. Once they get rid of the old work force, it's regulations and pay demands we will be back to where we were before Unions were created. Low wages, long hours and no bennies.

YES!! It is very competitive and there are lots of people looking for a job as well as housing. Can you believe they was some of the job center employment seekers act? I had a very interesting experience whenever I printed out my resumes or letters a man sitting at the adjacent computer to the printer kept on picking up my documents. Upon the 4th or 5th time from running back and forth from the computer to the printer and getting up I started to notice this man smiling. I was not in the mood for this. He got up picked up the print out and I let him know in a nice voice after all the other attempts that the paper he was holding was my print out and asked him if he had taken the previous print outs he didn't reply and then his look changed from a smile to a very angry look.He muffled his voice and said, "why don't you go look for employment somewhere else."Can you believe this jerk.I then grabbed the papers from his hand and he wouldn't let go.I yanked harder and sat back at the computer

The Employment world in these bigger cities often has some sort of discrimination involved with them. Is that American, or the New World Order?

I have been unemployed for a year and in that time I have been interviewed over the phone twice and face to face once. None of them went beyond these "preliminary" interviews. Though people I know who are working, get interviewed and get offered a job almost right away. So yes, for the most part those of us that unemployed are overlooked... or should I say almost ignored entirely.

In two words...Hell Yes! I have worked several trades, and in construction particularly, you have TONS of 'snow birds,' i.e. out-of-staters that come up just for the summer work, and are on a plane back down south by the time snow flies. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of local guys who cannot get hired. To add to that, you have corrupt organizations like Personnel Plus ripping people off. Personnel Plus's latest scam is hiring temps for base work...W/OUT PAYING DAVIS BACON. They are destroying the labor force in this town, because more and more employers will hire only through them: this does two things. 1) diminishes the earning power, and 2) leaves no real prospect for secure employment with a company, as everyone is a temp who can be dismissed whenever. It also states in Plus's contract that an employee cannot be hired by an outfit 6 MONTHS from being contracted trough PP. It's a scam that is making a couple of people down in Anchorage very rich, and that is about it.
