Anti-Pebble Initiative Passes By ‘Very Slim’ MarginAccording to the clerk of the Lake and Peninsula Borough, the “Save Our Salmon” initiative passed but only by a "very slim" margin 280 to 246.The so-called anti-Pebble Mine initiative has passed. According to the clerk of the Lake and Peninsula Borough, the “Save Our Salmon” initiative passed but only by a "very slim" margin 280 to 246. The fiercely contested ballot measure blocks any development that poses a significant threat to salmon streams but it was largely publicized as a vote for or against the Pebble gold and copper mine. Litigation is expected because the state attorney general says it would be unconstitutional for a local ordinance to trump state permitting. Read the unofficial election results here. |

Well, I really don't think you can call 53% to 47% a "very slim margin". Yes, the vote totals might be small but, for comparison, in a 1,000,000 total vote election, the margin would be almost 65,000 votes! Not a small margin at all.

Except that this passed by only 34 votes, not 65,000. So...yeah: slim margin.

Regardless resources are resources. They need to find a way to do the mine without destroying other resources. The funny thing is that while those voting margins maybe slim. the voting system is abit flawed and doesnt represent the population. Ballots for initiatives like this should be mailed to registered vehicle owners to be mailed in.

Regardless of what percentage all of the people should be able to vote on whether to destroy a food staple and make a group of rich people even richer.Or to open your minds to something more than a profit margin

Oh come on. Do the residents of the Lake and Peninsula borough really think that their votes will affect how the State of Alaska decides what to do with $300 billion dollars worth of minerals. This issue has already been decided, the State is just trying to get it going without looking like a bully. This vote may slow down the project(maybe a year or two), but the Pebble Mine will proceed within the next decade. Get ready.

Heres a thought.pebble could withdraw interest in operating here and sue the state and those who oppose it for lost revenue. Then who looses.

this shows the even split between the residents of the bay area. You know the anti folks were out for sure and the vote was still close.

Just think, if the residents of the North Slope had done this many years ago there would be no Prudhoe Bay
