Anchorage Middle School Suspension Numbers are ClimbingDisciplinary action increasesANCHORAGE - For eight years the number of students suspended from Anchorage middle schools has been declining, but newest figures, from the first semester of the current school year, show suspensions are going up. Staff suspended 652 students, which is 7 percent of the middle school population. Categories that saw increases are dangerous actions, with 91 suspensions, reckless and unsafe behavior, with 56 suspensions, willful disobedience with 49, and 37 students were sent home for disruptive behavior. 146 kids were suspended for fighting or physical violence. “We have to go in and look at what we think is going on in our students lives,” said ASD Middle School Director Leslie Vandergaw. “What are they bringing to school? What interventions are we using and are they being effective?” The number of high school students suspended remained the exact same as the last year, while the number of elementary students suspended increased by 45.
