ANCHORAGE - Firefighters recommend pet owners put a pet emergency sticker on their front door so they know animals are inside. Some of Anchorage's bravest are also some of the city's kindest: Not only are they in charge of saving our lives, but also our furry friends.

The Anchorage Fire Department is being recognized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for saving over a dozen pets in the last three weeks from apartment complex fires.

PETA'S Compassionate Fire Department Award will honor firefighters with a framed certificate, a box of vegan chocolates and new resuscitation masks, made just to fit small animals.

These heroes say saving the lives of every animal threatened by fire is just part of their job.

Firefighter Patrick O'shea wth the Anchorage Fire Department says, "if you can save someone's pet their very appreciative even if they don't get anything out of the unit if you can save that owners pets life then there really appreciative of that so we do all we can to save that pet."
