The annual Alaska Ski for Women event is this Sunday at Kincaid Park. Registration started Thursday and will continue through Friday.

The event is 2.4 miles and welcomes cross-country skiers of all levels. “You need to be able to put your skis on, and your poles and move – slide one foot forward, and then the other and stay on track,” said race founder Ann Mize. “If you're a beginning skier there's gentle hills in it, nothing steep or scary.”

Organizers are expecting more than 1,000 skiers to take part in the event, which raises money for non-profit groups working with domestic violence survivors.

“When it became Super Bowl Sunday it just was like the perfect fit, because the women could come out, do their event, feel good about skiing, feel good about donating and then they can go home to their families for the football party,” said Mize.

In the past five years Alaska Ski for Women has raised nearly $300,000 for groups helping abused women.

This will be the 16th year of the race.
