Kawagley was born in what is now Bethel on November 8, 1934, and was raised on the Kuskokwim Delta by his grandmother Matilda Oscar. He was the first Yup'ik person to graduate from high school in Bethel and published multiple books on indigenous knowledge and Alaska Native education. Kawagley served for the past 25 years as a faculty member with the cross-cultural studies and education programs at UAF. Oscar Kawagley is survived by his wife and four children, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. At his request, there will be no formal service but plans are underway for a potluck and gathering of friends in his honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Food Bank of Alaska located in Fairbanks. |
