Alaska Man with Felony DUI Record Arrested in North Pole After Chase

FAIRBANKS — An Eagle River man with four DUI convictions was charged with driving under the influence this week after leading Alaska State Troopers on a chase Saturday night in the North Pole area.
Troopers responded to the area of the 12 Mile Roadhouse at 10:21 p.m. after a report of a truck doing doughnuts in the parking lot, according to a criminal complaint.
Gary Michael Brown, 55, was found driving 61 mph in a 55 mph zone on the Richardson Highway, troopers said. He led troopers on a chase around Badger Road, but stopped in front of a spike strip troopers put down near the Riverview gas station.
He told troopers he drank “a little bit” but refused to take a breath-alcohol test because he already was under arrest and did not feel drunk or impaired. He told troopers he had been sober for a few years because of a liver transplant last year and only relapsed recently. He did not stop immediately because he knew he was going to jail for “a long time” and wanted to call his family and let them know he would not be around, according to a criminal complaint.
Brown has DUI convictions from 1996, 2004, 2008 and August 2011, troopers said. If convicted, this would be his third felony DUI.
