FAIRBANKS - Jim Wilde, the crusty 71-year-old Central man who was arrested and handcuffed at gunpoint by National Park Service rangers on the Yukon River last summer, was found guilty on Tuesday by a federal judge.

The decision came more than six months after a highly-publicized trial pitting Wilde against the federal government ended.

Wilde was charged with four misdemeanors, including refusing to stop, swerving his boat at the rangers boat during a short chase, resisting arrest and driving an unregistered boat. Wilde contested the first three charges.

Federal magistrate Scott Oravec found Wilde guilty on all three counts.

“I can’t believe it,” Wilde said by phone from his home in Central. “I’ve been waiting for over six months and I thought it was going to go away. I don’t know why they waited for six months.”

Wilde’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 28 in Fairbanks.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

the real reason he was stopped is because he did not have a stupid sticker on his boat it has nothing to do with right and wrong and everything to do with revenue collecting

I shake my head in dismay at the comments so far regarding this article, and this story. I might understand if it were the 60's, and everyone posting were anti-government hippies, but such is not the case. Mr. Wilde was armed, flagrantly and dangerously disobeyed lawful directives from law enforcement officers. He deserves to be convicted. If you clueless people don't like who is enforcing the laws in the parks, then get the laws changed. Neither you nor Mr. Wilde get to choose which laws and which officers you get to obey.

Justice in America is "just-us". Anyone who can think for themselves or show any willingness to oppose unjust laws and official acts are removed from the jury pool. The remaining jury obediently obey the judges unconstitutional order that jurors can only judge the facts and not the law in the case that the state or feds are prosecuting. Then the accused gets the full measure of "just-us" from the legal system. It's divide and conquer, American style with another citizens jailed, while our nation goes farther in debt. The victim is not only the accused but society as a whole. People are learning to fear and to have disrespect for law enforcement and our justice system. My beliefs about our system have changed dramatically over the past ten years and I will not cooperate with law enforcement, due to substantial fear for my personal safety. Life is getting uglier, while the world we have left for our children is meaner and crueler than ever. It's us vs. them and it's wrong.

OMG, this is crazy does the feds not have bigger things to do? Maybe like prosecuting those responsible for fast and Furious, and investigating and prosecuting those that are real dangers to the American People. This old guy was just out to enjoy what he probably has done for decades maybe one of his last opertunitie, isn't there a federal law that states it is illegal to interfer with a traditional hunt, the same should apply to fishing(if that is what he was doing). Rather then causing a ruckous they could have just waited until he came ashore for him to end his day peacfully.

This is why I support the Occupy Anchorage movement. They're not just a bunch of hippies; they're a cross-section of ordinary Alaskans who are tired of corporate abuse and federal tyranny. The Federal government has become a full-blown crime syndicate.

So....while our country is in one of the worst financial states in history...somehow, somewhere, someone deemed it necessary to chase down an old man who was operating, God forbid, an unregistered boat on a river in the middle of nowhere. WHAT A CRIMINAL ACT! He should be shot at dawn! Can't believe BS like this...
