FAIRBANKS—The Alaska Republican Party failed to reconvene its convention today in Anchorage when not enough delegates showed up.
Only 192 delegates registered for the session, according to a statement from the party. The rules require that 275 are needed for a quorum.
A statement under the names of party Chairman Randy Ruedrich and Vice Chairman Steve Colligan said the party’s central committee will consider all convention committee resolutions at its next meeting and that the party platform adopted earlier will soon be published.
Ruedrich, retiring from the party’s leadership, had urged delegates to stay away from today’s planned reconvening in an effort to prevent supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul from trying to gain further power in the state party. Paul supporters at the state convention in April managed to elect their choice for party leader, Russ Millette, over Ruedrich’s choice of a successor.
Ruedrich also earlier accused the Paul supporters of wanting to rewrite rules to award all of Alaska’s GOP delegates to Paul for the national convention, a charge that a top Paul supporter denied.
