A group of actors and producers from Alaska have formed an alliance to push for greater support for local film industry workers. The group says the state government needs to do more to encourage movie makers to hire Alaskans for their productions.

It is interesting that promoters of the Alaska film incentive program cite 12,000 night rentals at the Captain Cook hotel and the great year for the Marx Brothers restaurant as proof the scheme is successful. But think about it, the State of Alaska is paying millions of dollars to put these non Alaskans up in the Captain Cook hotel and wining and dining them at the Marx Brothers while Alaskans who do get the opportunity to work on these films are offered only the lowest positions at low wages. I mean really....Hollywood needs our help?

One important part of the film incentive story that you failed to mention was the data so far which indicates how much of Alaska state dollars are incentivizing job creation that primarily benefits non Alaskans. $13 million in tax incentives to create 1211 jobs, 516 NON ALASKANs were paid $28 million while 695 Alaskans were paid $3 million. Promoters trot out the success of Canada's film incentive program to support continuing the Alaska film incentive program but a very critical difference is the Canadian plan requires at least 75% of production expenses be spent in Canada with Canadians to qualify.

Joe D., I am certain that at some point people never thought, "I just graduated highschool and I am packing all of my stuff up and headed to Alaska for an oil field career" when people talked about providing incentives and lobbying for drilling for oil in the Arctic of Alaska.

Maybe is Alaska had good actors they would get hired. I am not saying we have zero, but we definately dont have enough for people to go looking here. I have never heard anyone say "I just graduated highschool and I am packing all of my stuff up and headed to alaska for an acting carreer." And I never will....thanks
