Air Force Postpones F-16 MoveAir Force Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz notified the Alaska Congressional delegation TuesdayALASKA – Tuesday the Air Force announced it has postponed a decision on whether or not to transfer the F-16 squadron at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Air Force Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz notified the Alaska Congressional Delegation that the Air Force will not act until after Congress has completed work on the Fiscal Year 2013 Budget. The budget bill could include a prohibition of the F-16 squadron transfer – something that Alaska Senators Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski have been working toward. “That to us is a huge win because it gets the administration out of this, it leaves it in the hands of Congress and that’s where it should have been in the first place,” said Begich. The senators had questioned the Air Force’s projects for cost savings and also warned of inadequate housing in Anchorage for 600 families that would be removed. In a news release, Murkowski called the current moment “half-time” and said Alaskans need a permanent victory. |
