FAIRBANKS — An AWOL sailor fleeing from a Navy investigation was sentenced to eight months in jail Friday after pleading guilty to perjury for obtaining fraudulent documents under a false name.
Royce Allen Eagle, a 26-year-old Virginian who used the name Rick Engle in Alaska, pleaded guilty to second-degree forgery and attempted forgery as part of a plea agreement.
In addition to the jail time, he must also perform 500 hours of community service.
According to court records, Eagle deserted the Navy in 2007 when he was the subject of a Naval Criminal Investigative Service Investigation.
In 2008, he came to Alaska and obtained a fraudulent Alaska birth certificate to hide his identity.
His deception came to light when he tried to apply for a passport using a fake Social Security number.
Eagle worked at Gallo’s Mexican Restaurant while in Fairbanks.
