On Monday, 76 Army soldiers returned to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson after a yearlong deployment in Bagram, Afghanistan.

The soldiers were part of the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, which provided logistical support to more than seven military units in Eastern Afghanistan.

Hundreds of families waited anxiously in a gym at JBER as their loved ones were welcomed home. Stella Netherly, 38, is just one of dozens of wives who said having their husband gone for so long requires many sacrifices.

“It’s very hard, but you know you just got to stay busy, strong for them,” she said.

Her husband Army Sgt. 1st Class Tremayne Netherly has served for more than 13 years in the Army and for him coming home to family is bittersweet.

“Long year, lost some friends, tough deployment, but family all came back together and it’s going to be better from now on…greatest experience, wouldn’t trade it for the world,” he said.

Ivette Perez, 39, was also in the crowd waiting to see her husband, 40-year-old Staff Sgt. Victor Perez.

“It’s hard not having him home, and you know taking care of my daughter,” she said.

Perez has served in the Army for more than 17 years, and has been deployed five times and said family helped keep him strong during deployment.

“She’s been strong… that’s the biggest thing, as long as everything is okay, I’m okay,” Perez said.

But for many soldiers, returning home and enjoying a simple life is what matters most.

I'm sorry for the errors in my last comment. I'm trying to use our speech recognition software and it's not quite perfect yet. But it's getting there. Pretty soon we'll be talking to our computers instead of using keyboards and a mouse .

WhenIs he going to end said on Tuesday, Jun 7 at 12:18 PM

When is this ridiculous conflict in Afghanistan going to end An our young men and women are goin stop dying in a useless conflict? There's absolutely no reason we should be in Afghanistan now. bin laden is no longer in the picture. The excuse that we're in Afghanistan to find bin laden is no longer valid. The people of Afghanistan to one as their the American people of all want as their so why are we still there? There is no good reason! Pull our troops are out now! Who cares little rest of the world thinks. Our main goal was to get bin laden and we've accomplished that goal so again there's no reason for us to be there. If the Afghanistan's want to fight amongst themselves as they have for thousands of years and many countries have tried to stop it and failed why should we stay there and lose lives when this is a no win situation? I can't help but believe that the only reason we're still there is greed and money. Let's just do like the Russians did just say to hell with it
