54 Mushers Sign Up for Iditarod on First Day

FAIRBANKS - Fifty-four mushers, including nine rookies, signed up for the 2013 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Saturday.

The signups were held at Iditarod headquarters in Wasilla during the race's annual volunteer appreciation picnic.

Among those signing up were 2012 Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey, four-time Iditarod champions Lance Mackey, Martin Buser and Jeff King. 2011 champion John Baker and 2004 champion Mitch Seavey also signed up, along with 2012 runner-up Aliy Zirkle and other top 10 finishers.

The 1,049-mile race between Anchorage and Nome begins Saturday, March 2.
