Two known gang members are behind bars after Anchorage police say they beat another man until he was unrecognizable.

It is gang violence that can be hard for police to suppress.

Cousins Rex Faumui, 18, and Patrick Tauanuu, 22, appeared in court on assault charges after police say they beat up 45-year-old Quinn Hennessy near their home at the 5700 block of Rocky Mountain Court.

“The location where this happened has always been kind of a problem area,” explains APD gang intelligence officer Scott Lofthouse.

“But, I don’t think it is because of all the citizens there. There is just a few particular ones that are involved in this activity and they start to get the mindset that they own that area and they are free to do what they want to at will.”

According to a police report, after he was initially arrested for the assault on July 3, Tauanuu got out on bail and threatened the neighbors who helped his alleged victim, saying he was coming for him and for his home.

The incident is not Tauanuu’s first run in with the law. In 2007, he pleaded guilty to an assault on a random man in a Holiday Station store in Mountain View. The altercation was captured on the convenience store’s security camera.

Investigators won’t say what the motivation is behind this recent beating, but they do say it is just one of many gang-related crimes happening on Anchorage streets.

“They're involved in robberies, internet credit card fraud, burglaries, and assaults. Just about any crime you can think of, gang members are involved in them,” says Officer Scott Lofthouse.

Lofthouse is the one man in the police department whose job it is to track Anchorage’s 74 validated gangs and their members. He says it can be hard to keep up because police can’t be everywhere at once.

“They will start to get more and more bold, start to commit more crimes,” he says. “Then we identify that's a problem area, and try to suppress the activity.”

It is a cycle of violence and suppression that continues on Anchorage's streets

Bail for Rex Faumui and Patrick Tauanuu was set at $25,000 cash each. Tauanuu is also facing a witness tampering charge for his alleged threats to his neighbors.

Alaska has awesome gun laws for a reason. Maybe the "thugs" would think twice if they weren't the only ones carrying firearms.

Its amazing to me that there are 74 known gangs in this town..I come from a much bigger place and there is not that many on the streets. I agree throw there &**$# in jail and leave them there, and put a cash bond on them that they know they cant get out on. All these losers do is attack the innocent and try to get the kids involved to do there dirty work!

If our cities would make it a crime to be a gang member, we could prevent a lot of heart ache for law abiding citizens. Lets face it, what good do any of these gangs do for the community. They are all looking to commit crimes against the community, so arrest each and every one for belonging to a gang -- make it illegal. The police know who these insects are and should be expected to arrest them like they do any crime. Being a gang member should be against the law.

Easy way to reduce gang membership. Step 1: Put a bounty on each gang member's head dead or alive - more more if dead -a savings to taxpayers and our court system. a. Gang Member -$5,000.00 b. Gang Leader - $15,000.00 Con

First offense, Prison; Second offense, Deportation. We really don't need the likes of this type of human being walking the streets of Anchorage.

A lot of parents move up here to get their kids away from the crimes they have committed while in a gang but they do not do anything for the kid to help him or(her)to stay away from the gangs. They think just moving will solve the problem, but it does not they just put them in a new location and they are right back doing the same old thing. When I came to Alaska there was only 3 different gangs in Anchorage and now 75 WOW

Fines, and money, mean nothing to these two. There is not much that is meaningful to individuals who have reached this state of existence. There are two choice, only: 1. Find something really meaningful to them, and affect it. This means roust their gang members and put as many of them in an underfunded prison as possible. When they get out, roust them again. And again. And again. These individuals are stupid, buy, like pigeons, will respond to stimulus. 2. Eliminate them. Those are the two choices. There are not others.

Since these cretins called gang members enjoy thuggery and murder, when caught, they should be tried under the federal terrorism laws, for terrorists they are. Harsh treatment or the death penalty will either change their minds or eliminate their species altogether.

Anch does have a anti-gang law, unknown if anyone has been charged with it though. Perhaps APD could enlighten us. Hopefully they will have the book thrown at them...hard....

Internet credit card fraud? Come on, gang members aren't even smart enough to know how to do that. It's not only Samoans that are involved in crime, only the ones who weren't raised the right way. I know plenty respectful Samoan adults with legit jobs. Don't let the action of these two, decide your judgements for the whole culture. That's racism, and you're just adding along to it.
