Alaska Firefighters Head to Lower 48ANCHORAGE - About 100 personnel from the Alaska Fire Service left this morning to assist people in the Lower 48. The five firefighting crews originally were headed to Utah, but were diverted to Wyoming instead. Another 100 Alaskans will go to Wyoming Wednesday, with the possibility of another 200 deploying somewhere in the Lower 48. "It was determined that at this particular time we were able to provide that support and still have enough resources here to deal with whatever might come up," said Mel Slater of the Alaska Fire Service. Interior Alaska has had fewer wildfires than average so far this summer. |
