At left, the line of vehicles at about 11 p.m. Sunday night held up by the Sterling Highway closure.

ALASKA - After an attempted traffic stop on the Kenai Peninsula, following multiple REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) reports, a female driver fired on an Alaska Wildlife Trooper about 6:15 Sunday night. The female driver of a yellow SUV had pulled to a temporary stop after traveling northbound on the Sterling Highway near Happy Valley, but then began shooting at the trooper. The trooper returned fire, but the vehicle took off northbound again.

The vehicle stopped at mile 147 in the middle of the highway, and troopers from Anchor Point and Soldotna, along with Homer police and members of the South Central SERT team responded.

After about half an hour, the woman put her hands out of the vehicle's window, and troopers made contact with her. She had an apparent gunshot wound to the midsection and was taken to the hospital in Homer.

Alaska Bureau of Investigation officers are investigating the shooting, and the trooper involved is on administrative leave for three days, per policy, after which the trooper's name will be released.

Troopers say the Sterling Highway was closed in both directions at mile 147, and was expected to reopen around 1 a.m. Monday.

It's evidently the summer of idiots daring police to shoot them.

Sadly enough I am afraid that this type of incidence is only going to increase as they have in the lower 48 states, most of them are kept hushed up. The economy has become so bad that people who are not welfare "types" have found themselves unable to keep up with the ever increasing cost of living. I for one hope that things improve so people at least have hope of keeping their heads above water again. If not, we will probably just see an increase of people putting themselves into dangerous situations perhaps hoping that the choice of living or dying is taken out of their hands.

There can't be any complaint here. When that woman began shooting, they will be a response.

Two words: Brain Dead! You will always lose in a gun battle with the troopers and all the assets they have. Just don't do it! The law doesn't require that you like the laws or the troopers; good sense is not doing things that get their attention and if you do, treat them with respect because any other posture is self inflicted pain. Do I really have to say this? Jumpin Jimminy, guys: turn on the lights!

They change the name of the program from "Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately" to "Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately" recently?
