KENAI - The dipnetting season officially opened on Tuesday.

Every day hundreds of people flock to the banks around the mouth of the Kenai River, Hoping to stock up on salmon.

But it's a waiting game.

As the morning tide comes in, fishermen head to the water to try their hand at dipnetting.

For first time fishers, like Naomi Faagata it's a lesson in luck, not skill.

Last year dipnetters caught 540,000 salmon near the mouth of the Kenai, but you wouldn't know it if you were fishing with her.

One by one, she watches her friends start to fill their limits.

Eventually the waiting game grows old, and two hours in, her net is still empty.

But she's counting on her persistence to pay off.

Fish and Game estimates about one and a half million red salmon go through the kenai river.

Dipnetting on the Kenai is allowed between six a.m. and 11 p.m. the season ends July 31. There is an emergency order in effect during 2012 prohibiting keeping king salmon caught while dipnetting; they may not be removed from the water and have to be released unharmed.
