Alaska Election ResultsIn Tuesday's election, Republicans took control of the state Senate, likely ending the bipartisan majority caucus. Democrats Joe Thomas and Joe Paskvan of Fairbanks lost their races to Republicans Senator John Coghill and former Senator Pete Kelly, respectively. In Anchorage, Democratic Senator Bettye Davis was defeated by Republican Representative Anna Fairclough in Anchorage's Senate District M, and in a battle of two incumbents, Democratic Senator Albert Kookesh of Angoon lost to Republican Senator Bert Stedman of Sitka. Republicans also kept control of the state House. In two Anchorage Senate races where Republicans also hoped to gain seats, Democratic Senators Hollis French and Bill Wielechowski appear to have held off opposition from Republicans Bob Bell and Bob Roses, respectively. Republican Congressman Don Young sailed to an easy victory against Democratic state Representative Sharon Cissna, winning his 21st term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Voters rejected the ballot measure to hold another constitutional convention, and approved nearly half a billion dollars in a transportation bond.
