For thousands of Alaskans, Glen Alps trailhead is a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

With the addition of an electronic park-and-pay system earlier this week, it’s becoming much easier to hit the trails.

"I think it'll catch on because whenever you're asking for exact change, even if it's only five dollars, not everyone has a five dollar bill,” said Bill O’Connell, an area hiker.

Everyone from hikers to bikers and even just people looking for a good view will be able to pay the five dollar parking fee with their credit cards.

“A lot of people, before we got it, would say, ‘oh, I don't have cash with me—all I've got is my credit card,’ so I think people are really happy to have it,” said Renee Darkis, the trailhead’s volunteer caretaker.

Darkis says hikers are already taking advantage of the new system.

"It was very easy to use, very convenient,” says Ray Weaver, visiting Alaska from Colorado.

But, if you prefer paper to plastic, never fear.

"We'll still have both options,” Darkis says. “If people have cash, don't have credit cards or don't want to use them they can still do both ways."
