A Sitka man has been sentenced to six months in prison for illegally trafficking sea otters.
According to court documents, 36-year-old Michael E. Smith illegally sold sea otter pelts while working at the Sitka Tribal Tannery. The tanned pelts were then shipped out of state to an undercover agent. Smith's arrest and sentencing is the result of a year and a half long undercover operation to crack down on sea otter hunting and trafficking in southeast Alaska. |

It is obvious that sunflower7catcher is ignorant to SE Alaska. Sea otters are substantially harming Alaska's fishery resources in Alaska. In CA where they are inundated by pollution, human encroachment, aqua flotsam...etc. they do have a problem, but that is CA.

Otters are COMPLETLEY wiping out resources in southeast alaska that are shipped all over the world to feed millions of PEOPLE. Resources that provide jobs that support families and local economies, so dont break the law! support a legal otter hunter ...

The native american people have been harvesting sea otters since time began its there right and duty to protect there inviroment and ours also.When the goverment and people who don't know anything but what they see on tv try to tell them how to do what they have done forever thats the crime!

I'm glad to see that somebody's working on the sea otter problem. It is difficult under current restrictions to eradicate these ocean going weasels. Sea otters are destroying shell fisheries at an alarming rate. I fully support the Legal, Federally sanctioned harvesting of sea otters.

GOOD GOIN'! Our critters have a hard enough time surviving with pollution, human encroachment, aqua flotsam....ect. without the likes of these murderous (the lives of the otters) theives ! ! ! hope you other illegal hunters and trappers take notice !
