A Sitka man has been sentenced to six months in prison for illegally trafficking sea otters.

According to court documents, 36-year-old Michael E. Smith illegally sold sea otter pelts while working at the Sitka Tribal Tannery.

The tanned pelts were then shipped out of state to an undercover agent.

Smith's arrest and sentencing is the result of a year and a half long undercover operation to crack down on sea otter hunting and trafficking in southeast Alaska.

It is obvious that sunflower7catcher is ignorant to SE Alaska. Sea otters are substantially harming Alaska's fishery resources in Alaska. In CA where they are inundated by pollution, human encroachment, aqua flotsam...etc. they do have a problem, but that is CA.

I'm glad to see that somebody's working on the sea otter problem. It is difficult under current restrictions to eradicate these ocean going weasels. Sea otters are destroying shell fisheries at an alarming rate. I fully support the Legal, Federally sanctioned harvesting of sea otters.
