FAIRBANKS - A 12-year-old boy died of an apparent gunshot wound in an incident with another 12-year boy at a Fairbanks home this afternoon, according to Fairbanks police.

Police provided no additional information about the incident at Susitna Court in the Birchwood Homes neighborhood near Fort Wainwright. More information is expected later this evening.

The boy who died did not live at the house, Lieutenant Dan Welborn said. His family has not been notified.

Welborn said the other boy, who he said was “involved,” was a resident of the home. It was not immediately known if any adults or other children were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Police said the shooting was reported at about 3:30 p.m. It was not yet publicly known who reported the shooting.

None of the several children and neighbors outside the house at the time reported hearing any gunfire.

to much finger pointing said on Wednesday, Jul 18 at 9:52 PM

Way to much finger pointing and name calling with available information. Story should not even been published till next of kin notified, what if they see this and recognize the house, there is not good way to get this news but this would make it even worse.....but common sence thinking no longer applys to the media or its commentors.............

Well Mr. LongBear, let keep this in the family, eh? In gun handling, there really is no such thing as "gun accident". It carelessness or nothing. There are many variables I do admit. But homeowner is always responsible for what happened inside that home. Just the way a captain of the boat is responsible for what happened on his vessel or a parent is responsible for his or her kid.

You people have absolutely no information, yet you make the mighty schism leap to blaming the homeowner for a multiple list of offenses not once mentioned in this brief article. One boy who did not live at the residence is dead by gunshot. Another boy who actually lived at the home was there at the time and believed to be involved in the shooting. Period. No statement regarding who the gun belonged to. No statement concerning what transpired to ignite the shooting. Actually, the "incident" could have been a suicide and the living boy attempted to intervene. Could have been the dead boy accidentally shot himself, or the other boy could have shot him unintentionally. Gun could have been there, boy or boys could have stolen from somewhere, and yes, it could have belonged to the owner of the home - where it could have been in a safe which got broken into by the kids. Way too many variables for you to blast the "homeowner." Or stupid people who honor the 2nd amendment.-I don't have guns.

Another case where some stupid gun owner not putting his weapon in a safe place and not teaching his kid about gun safety. Too bad for the other kid, 12 years old is awfully too young to died from this sort of incident.
