1,700 Local Food Establishments Have Only Five Inspectors

ANCHORAGE - The 1,700 food establishments in Anchorage keep the city's five health inspectors very busy.

During recent inspections, the city’s inspectors found food stored at improper temperatures, dirty cutting boards and un-sanitized cleaning rags.

"The main one is when an employee who is working for the restaurant is ill and they don't have sick days and they come to work,” said Janet Vietmeier, Deputy Director of the Department of Health and Human Services.

“The employer, the restaurant, is required to have an employee heath policy, so we do a lot of education and as much intervention as possible both with the employee and the employer to educate them,” said Vietmeier.

Vietmeier said 3 in 10 food establishments have more than two critical violations of the city’s food code.

With a compliance rate of 71 percent, which means the establishment has two or less critical violations, Vietmeier said the Department of Health is working with businesses to make improvements.

"Our goal was 90 percent; of course we would like to be at 100 percent - that would be in an ideal world,” said Vietmeier.

The city said even though all complaints were investigated in 2011, not all restaurants had the yearly check-up; 91 percent of the establishments were inspected.

The municipality’s Department of Health said its biggest difficulties are establishments that do not have set hours, such as seasonal snack shacks, some caterers, and truly mobile food units.

Is there a website that we can review restaurant's inspection report or do we just get to take our chances hoping not to pick any of the 3 out of 10?

It just makes me want to rush out for a mystery meal. The mystery being what is lurking in the meal. I am the inspector in my home kitchen and inspect daily.

The state has no health department inspectors, so you can just imagine what the restaurants look like statewide, scary. I saw the back side of Sal's Diner in Soldotna one time, I threw up out in the parking lot, it was that disgusting. You take your chances when you dine out, truly

1700 places divided among 5 inspectors = 340 places divided by 200 work days per year = 1.7 inspections per day!!! TOUGH JOB!

There is quite a bit of exaggeration here. While there are some restaurants that are really bad the majority of them pass health inspection standards. If they were that filthy they would have to have a mandatory closing down until the problems are fixed. I only know of China King Buffet back in 2004 that happened. They got a 64 out of 100

please pray for my brother, the "oomingmak":), his givadarn's busted :(. sometimes when he steams veggies, even if the steamer is dirty from 1-2 days b4 he still uses it. he has home-cooked pizzas on an unwashed pan. he thinks nothing wrong to make a salad, rince off the used knives and bowl, and place on the dish drying rack. "its just veggies, not meat orfish, or eggs, it won't kill ya". his prizewinning yucky is to cut one non-meat or fish item, wipe off the knife on his pants or sometimes even his undershorts (shorts, not briefs or boxers- he is too big for normal undershorts.) and continue slicing cheese. HE DOES THESE THINGS WHEN COOKING FOR OTHER PPL! THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND PATIENCE IN READING MY POST

are they thinking at downtown soup kitchen? i appreciate their time and efforts but y always weird soup. i also know that they exist on donations but do they really never receive donations of chicken noodle, veggie beef, tomato, or mushroom? how about chicken, noodles, veggies, or beef, that could be cooked and mixed together in a surprising number of ways? i'm not suggesting fancy food like on tv, but hey, hey, d.s.k., use the smarts you're blessed with, ok? thank you, the 100 plus regular visitors

THE ANCHORAGE GOSPEL RES-Q MISSION USES BARELY-SAFE MEAT AND VEGGIES, AND EXPIRED SALAD DRESSINGS. P.S. IT ALSO ALLOWS SORWEBBERS INTO ITS PROGRAMS. MAY HEAVEN HELP THE REAL RES-Q-ERS, THE WORKERS AND THE PROGRAM-ERS AND THE DINNER AND CLOTHES-USERS.
