ANCHORAGE - With 428 of 438 precincts reporting the results from Tuesday’s primary election, the November general election contests for Southcentral Alaska have become clear, barring any significant changes from absentee or questioned ballots - the results are not official until those are counted.

There were some predictable results: Congressman Don Young took nearly 80 percent of the vote in the Republican U.S. House primary, while Democratic state Representative Sharon Cissna’s votes dwarfed those of her four opponents.

There were some surprises as well: Two members of the Senate Bipartisan Working Majority will not be returning to the Capitol. Valley Republican Senator Linda Menard was taken out by Mike Dunleavy, and Kenai Republican Senator Tom Wagoner was beat by Soldotna challenger Peter Micciche. But Anchorage Senator Lesil McGuire – a member of the bipartisan coalition – held off newcomer Jeff Landfield.

For the Democrats, there were a couple of nail-biters. Two races went back and forth: For Senate District M, Senator Bettye Davis was trailing former Representative Harry Crawford for a while, but in the end she prevailed by 75 votes, barring any changes from the absentee and questioned ballots. And for House District 17, Cal Williams led the race against Geran Tarr initially, but Tarr went on to win by 109 votes.

And looking at the numbers Wednesday morning, voters said no to both ballot measures, though the numbers for Ballot Measure One are so close it's one of the few results that absentee and questioned ballots could change. Ballot Measure One would have let local governments increase property tax exemptions up to $50,000, and Ballot Measure Two would have implemented a Coastal Zone Management system run by the state. The latter was a landslide "no" vote.
